About

The UKL mass balances and associated website were developed by Jeffrey D. Walker, PhD and Jacob Kann, PhD for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Klamath Tribes. Funding was provided by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

Details on the current datasets and methodologies used to generate these balances can be found in the most recent mass balance report (Walker and Kann, 2022), which is available in the Reports section.

As part of this project, an automated data pipeline was built using the {targets} R package. This pipeline allows the mass balance datasets to be efficiently updated each year by automatically fetching the most recent data from the various data sources, and then performing a series of data cleaning, transformation, and processing steps before calculating the monthly mass balances of water and nutrients.
